Delivering quality services to foster healthy development in children ...

Early Head Start

GLEAMNS Head Start is a comprehensive child development program which serves 1665 children from three to five years old and their families.  We are a child-focused program and have an overall goal of increasing the school readiness and social competence of young children in low-income families.

Funding for our Head Start program is provided by the Administration for Children and Families through the Department of Health and Human Services.  Grants are awarded by the ACF Region IV Office directly to GLEAMNS Human Resources Commission, Inc. for the purpose of operating the Head Start program at the community level.

GLEAMNS Head Start, the largest Head Start program in the state of South Carolina, operates 20 Head Start centers in a ten county area.  These counties include Greenwood, Laurens, Edgefield, Abbeville, McCormick, Newberry, Saluda, Richland, Lexington, and Fairfield.

Our program has a long tradition of delivering comprehensive and high quality services designed to foster healthy development in low-income children.  We provide a range of individualized services in the areas of education and early childhood development; special needs; medical, dental, and mental health; nutrition; parent involvement and family services.  In addition, the entire range of Head Start services is responsive and appropriate to each child’s and family’s developmental, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage and experience.

Much of the success experienced by GLEAMNS Head Start is directly linked to the services provided by other community agencies partnering with our program to best serve our communities.  Without such partnerships, we could not attain the high goals we set for ourselves to provide quality services.

We are required by the Federal government to obtain a 20% local match in our overall funding.  We obtain this match in the form of in-kind contributions from our community partners.  Some of these contributions come as volunteer hours, donated space for our facilities, discounted costs for services, and donated services.

The public school districts are our largest contributors of donated services.  These services are provided by way of speech and language screenings, evaluations, and therapy; vision and developmental screenings; and direct services for our children with special needs.  Without the assistance of partners similar to these, our resources would limit the number of children and families we serve.

GLEAMNS Head Start accepts all application regardless of race, creed, sex, religion, national origin, or disability condition.

Persons interested in enrollment for children may complete this online application. Please complete all non-shaded areas of the application. You will be contacted at a later date to provide proof of family income and child's date of birth.
