GLEAMNS CADETS Program Celebration + College Tour and State House Visit

Once again, the GLEAMNS Youth Leadership Program partnered with the GLEAMNS CADETS Summer Program (formerly known as the GLEAMNS GEMS Program) in efforts to expand summer job training opportunities to local students. Fifteen students, ranging from ages 15-17, were selected to participate in the program. The program began on June 10, 2019, and for six weeks, students received "hands on" job experience as well as knowledge of how they could further their education after graduating high school.

On July 23, 2019, the CADETS program concluded with a "Celebration" at the GLEAMNS Brewer Complex in Greenwood. GLEAMNS CADETS Summer Director Dr. Pearly Milton facilitated the event, and students used PowerPoint presentations to individually share their program experiences. Summer Mentor Barbara Sanders provided remarks, and the ceremony concluded as Dr. Milton presented students with their official certificates of program completion.

On July 24, 2019, GLEAMNS students toured both Benedict College and the State House in Columbia, SC. These educational tours were done in part as a fun yet informative way to bring the GLEAMNS CADETS program to a close. Students first went to Benedict College and were given a comprehensive tour of the campus. Students learned how effective a college tour can be when making the decision to apply for school.

After the touring the college, students visited the South Carolina State House. Students learned about the history and architecture of the structure as well as pivotal legislators. Students were also able to view the chambers for the House and Senate since legislature was not in session at the time.
