GLEAMNS Migrant Head Start Program
promotes continuity of services for migrant children and families,
empowering families to be self-sufficient and independent. We are
committed to providing a healthy, educational and safe environment for
children; thereby reducing parents emotional strain inherent in having
children in the fields or work camps.
Our program is funded by East Coast Migrant Head Start Project to serve
40 migrant and seasonal infants, toddlers, and preschool children. The
GLEAMNS Migrant Head Start Center is one of a series of Head Start
Centers on the East Coast which provides high quality child care
services for children of families who migrate to the ridge areas (Aiken,
Edgefield and Saluda counties) of South Carolina to harvest crops such
as peaches, strawberries, muscatine grapes, cucumbers and tomatoes.
The summer program operates during the months of June through mid August,
Mondays through Fridays - 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours vary and may be
expanded due to the availability for work. Preschool children of
agricultural workers who migrate to the Ridge area from other
geographical locations to harvest crops are eligible to receive service.
Families must provide income proof from their last employer, child’s
birth certificate, immunization record, social security card, health
insurance or Medicaid card.
We coordinate and collaborate with other Head Start Programs
as well as local educational, health and social services agencies to ensure that
children and families are provided services that they are entitled to –
nutrition, health, education, parent education and literacy
opportunities, as they move from one location to another. One full time
and twenty part-time seasonal employees provide the services at GLEAMNS
Migrant Head Start Program. We have exceptional staff with credentials in
early childhood education. We are licensed by the South Carolina
Department of Social Services and monitored by East Coast Migrant Head
Start Project for quality assurance.
GLEAMNS Migrant Head Start Program has
operated since 1994 in Edgefield County. We are currently sharing a new
beautiful Head Start Center, Edgefield Learning Center located at 141 SE
Diggs Road, Trenton, South Carolina.
